The super zoom category is jam packed with cameras offering the reach that pocketable cameras cannot — but the LUMIX DMC-FZ70 enters the fray with a brighter than average lens and 4K video. The Panasonic FZ80 uses a 1/2.3″ sensor, typical for super zooms at this price point. But what’s not typical is the bright f/2.8-5.9 lens, something that’s harder to find.
The camera also offers decent speed, with shooting bursts at up to 10 fps.Panasonic is really making a name for themselves in video, and the FZ80 looks to be no exception. 4K video is another feature tough to find for less than $500. The 4K footage is shot at 30 fps.
Even if video isn’t your thing, the 4K introduces a number of photo modes, that, if previous models are any indication, are both incredibly fun and powerful. The 4K Post Focus takes a short video, adjusting the focus throughout. That allows you to choose the focus after the shot, since all the information is included in that video.
Creating a sharper image by combining multiple shots is also available through the same technique with in-camera focus stacking. The 4K photo modes aren’t as quick as the stills and have a slightly lower resolution, but they’re one of a handful of photo modes that are truly unique to Panasonic and incredibly fun to use.
That capability is wrapped up in a bridge-style body with a touchscreen, wi-fi and several physical controls. The camera weighs just over a pound. While the FZ80 isn’t going to pack the same punch as its big sister, the FZ2500 with a larger one-inch sensor, the list of features is pretty impressive considering the price tag.
