The Panasonic Lumix FZ200 is a traveler's dream with big zoom, big sensor and small body
Looking for a camera for travel? The Panasonic FZ200 is easily portable but offers more zoom than competitors.

The smartphone may have largely done away with the point-and-shoot, but compacts with big sensors and big zooms are still hanging around. The Panasonic FZ200 is both, using a one-inch sensor and a 15x zoom despite the small size.

The FZ200 uses a 20 megapixel one-inch sensor. The zoom lens is longer than the earlier model with a 15x optical zoom, which is great for travel. The trade-off for the extra zoom is that the lens isn't as bright as the FZ100. The combination of the larger sensor and big zoom, however, make the camera an excellent option for traveling.

Speed is also a perk with a 10 fps burst speed. The small camera also includes optical image stabilization, which is alwas a plus when working with longer zooms, as well as when shooting in low light.

4K video is also included, which, like other Panasonic cameras, includes 4K photo modes for faster bursts, post focus and in-camera focus stacking. Panasonic also added sequencing with an in-camera effect to show movement in a single frame.

Those features are wrapped up in a rather compact body that weighs less than a pound. While many compacts ditch the viewfinder, the FZ200 still has an electronic viewfinder intact along with the LCD screen.

The Panasonic FZ200 covers a rare mix of a larger sensor and a larger zoom. Without entering into the larger, bridge-style cameras like the Sony RX10 series and the Panasonic FZ2500, close competitors include the Olympus Stylus 1, but it's a 2013 camera in need of an update. The 2015 Canon G3 X also mixes a one-inch sensor with a zoom, though a larger 25x lens that's also a bit brighter. For the price and mix of features, however, the Panasonic FZ200 looks to be an excellent camera for travel. The camera is slated to retail for about $800 with availabaility begining in March of 2018.

Panasonic Reviews

As a manufacturer known just as well for their camcorders as their cameras, Panasonic was the first on scene to offer 4K video inside a dedicated camera. The Panasonic Lumix GH4 is the first mirrorless camera boasting the higher video resolution, with the FZ1000 as the first compact, bridge-style camera to do so.

Panasonic also produces cameras that provide both a longer zoom range and image stabilization at a price that's relatively cheap. For photographers that need versatility in a small package, Panasonic digital cameras can provide many selections that are suitable. Having something for amateurs and serious enthusiasts at the same time, Panasonic offers a great selection of digital cameras, from ultra compacts to mirrorless cameras. They can be hard to compare because every camera comes with its own unique features and traits.

Panasonic cameras are perfect for consumers that prefer to use automatic modes. Almost all Panasonic cameras currently produced come with a feature called iAuto, which will automatically select the best scene mode for any subject. This feature, in combination with image stabilization will make it very easy for someone just starting out to take excellent photos.

Panasonic cameras are designed to be easy to figure out, giving the user easy access to settings, and users that have reviewed Panasonic digital cameras are quick to confirm this fact. When you opt for a Panasonic camera, you'll discover that it comes with an LCD screen, an optical zoom lens which is very versatile, and is both lightweight and fairly compact.

Panasonic's most popular models are their super zooms and mirrorless, with models ranging from cameras with huge zooms to mirrorless cameras earning the “smallest yet” distinction like the GM-1. They've been more focused on their mirrorless line lately, without introducing budget point-and-shoots in quite some time.
